Frequently Asked Questions
Q: “What’s the difference between a PTO and a PTA?”
A: PTAs are local groups that
affiliate with the National PTA. These groups pay dues to their respective state
PTAs and to the National PTA, and they receive benefits from those
organizations. "PTO" is the general acronym for the many groups (PTOs, PCCs,
HSAs, etc.) that choose to remain independent. PTOs are free to write their own
bylaws, and they can either not charge dues at all or keep whatever dues they do
charge at their school. While "PTA" is the most well-recognized acronym to the
general public (perhaps because of the Harper Valley song and movie), these days
more than 75 percent of K-8 parent-teacher groups are actually independent PTOs.
Of the more than 112,000 K-12 schools in the United States, fewer than 22,000 of
those still have formally affiliated PTA units.
Q: “What does the PTO have to offer?”
A: Three big things:
-
Studies show that children succeed in school at higher levels when parents are involved.
PTO is a great way to get involved, contribute and be better informed about issues affecting MES and the Maricopa Unified School District.
Your involvement demonstrates the importance of school to your children.
-
Together, parents and teachers can be a voice for children’s interests in the community.
The PTO is a great way to connect with other parents, teachers and administration.
-
Relationships that develop with other parents through PTO form a basis for consistent, healthier messages to children, both in and out
of school. Plus, we have a great time!
Q: “What has the PTO accomplished so
far?”
A: The 2007-2008 School year was a
breakout year for the MES Diamondbacks PTO. We sponsored events such as the 1st Annual MES Spring
Carnival, Sock Hop, Winter Express and Pumpkin Walk just to name a few. We also raised over $20,000 which was
used in part to fund purchases of needed office and classroom equipment, monthly Teacher Appreciation
lunches, and other needs. But with your help, we can do even better! In 2008-09 we hope to build on past
successes through a variety of Family events, projects and activities that build involvement and community.
Q: “Why should I join the PTO?”
A: There is no charge to be a member, you’ll feel great about helping out, and most important: WE NEED YOU! Talk to one of the PTO
representatives to find out how you can contribute to the PTO, the school and your children’s success.
Q: “I don’t have a lot of time in my busy schedule, and I’m afraid I’ll get sucked into a “black hole” of
never-ending demands for my time and energy.”
A:The PTO is not a black hole. All of us have busy schedules with work, home, family and community activities.
We’re all too aware of and sensitive to the demands placed on parents. One example is our Two Hour Power
initiative, where you can commit just two hours this school year! Contact Volunteer Coordinator Kim
Cancellieri or another PTO Board Member for more information. We will respect your time constraints!
Q: “Isn’t the PTO just about fundraising? How fun can that be?”
A: While fundraising is an important part of what we do, determining priorities and deciding how those funds will be
utilized in the school is an equally important challenge. The MES Diamondbacks PTO priorities
for 2008-09 include adoption of the Accelerated Reader ® Program, Parent &
Community Outreach, and purchase of vital classroom equipment, materials and
supplies.
